A Comprehensive Guide to Area Rugs

When furnishing your home, the first things that you look for are the major appliances, such as the refrigerator and washing machine, and the most important items of furniture, such as chairs, beds, sofas, and a dining table. But the accessories in your home can be just as important. And one very overlooked but important accessory is the area rug.

First of all, exactly how do we define an “area rug”?

The strict definition of an area rug is a carpet or rug that covers part of the floor of a room (as opposed to a carpet, which generally covers the entire floor space).

So why would you need an area rug?

Area rugs are used in various rooms around the house, and they have different usages and forms. Here are some examples:

  • In the bedroom, you may want an extra layer of comfort next to the bed so that your feet touch a surface that is softer than the regular carpet when you get up in the morning. For this purpose, you may choose something with a heavy, shag pile, such as wool flokati rugs

  • In the kitchen, you may want to put a rug down on the floor to make the room seem a little less Spartan. As there are often spillages and this room tends towards moisture and oil, you may choose something made from a durable, washable material, such as an acrylic rug.

  • In the bathroom, you would probably want a soft rug next to the bath so that as you get in and out, your feet touch something soft and comfortable rather than the cold, tiled or linoleum floor. In this case, you would also choose something like a polypropylene rug that does not get damaged by the constant presence of water.

  • In the living room, you may seek a particular décor or look. To enhance this look, the right kind of rug would be very important. Therefore, if you are into Victorian style, for example, you may go for an elegant floral rug that would provide the finishing touches to the overall décor. And if you prefer a more modern style, there are all manner of contemporary rugs out there that would suit you.

  • In your children’s room, there are so many kids’ rugs that add a touch of fun to any bedroom. Here, you could get your child to choose the actual design with you.

  • There are even area rugs for the outside of your home. For example, if you are intending to decorate your patio and put out some furniture for your own comfort, you may appreciate a good outdoor rug. Outdoor rugs are specially made to withstand the rigors of the elements and they will enhance the effect of any patio or yard design.

Therefore, when you are furnishing your home, decorating a room, or trying to achieve a specific look, don’t forget about the humble area rug. It can make all the difference to your home, providing a great combination of chic and comfort.
